Outlined are the provisions of the national legislation and the two national archaeological and architectural inventories, and how the planning authorities implement them in dealing with development. The influence of volunteer organisations such as ICOMOS Ireland and the Industrial Heritage Association of Ireland in developing awareness and promoting the national cataloguing of industrial sites is addressed. This paper also deals with the actions of both organisations in recognising and addressing the education and training necessary to develop expertise in conserving our industrial heritage. The impact these have had on recognition of the significance of industrial heritage and the necessity for its protection in the widest sense is explored. This paper was presented during the 2nd International Symposium on Cultural Heritage and Legal Issues, organized in October 2015 by ICOMOS Slovenia with the support of the Council of Europe, the Institute for the Protection of Cultural heritage in Slovenia, the Slovenian Ministry of Culture and TICCIH Slovenia. %N 2 %K industrial heritage %K legal framework %K inventories %K Ireland %K national legislations %K legal protection %K economical and social aspects %K protection of industrial heritage %K international standards %K Public and civic architecture %K Cultural significance %K values %K national listing %K Archaeological heritage %K Architectural heritage %K cultural policy %K development plans %K heritage conservation organisations %K NGOs %K training %K capacity building %P 36-43 %B Protection and Reuse of Industrial Heritage: Dilemmas, Problems, Examples %C Ljubljana %D 2018 %I ICOMOS Slovenia %L icomos2134
