abstractConnecting Practice is a joint exploration by ICOMOS and IUCN aimed at learning and developing new approaches that recognise and harness the interconnection of natural and cultural values and processes of highly significant heritage landscapes and seascapes to achieve a more effective, creative and inclusive way to maintain them and to learn from their long-lasting lessons. Since the project began in 2013, three phases have been implemented. Each phase has contributed to increasing the awareness among heritage management actors about the close interrelations of the natural and cultural dimensions of heritage places and of need for joint approaches in their protection and management. Multi-disciplinary fieldwork, resulting in collective experiential learning, has always been an integral part of the Connecting Practice working method. During Phase III, field visits to four case study sites (in the United Arab Emirates, Senegal, the Portuguese Azores and China) were carried out. The fieldwork was complemented by the analysis of the meaning of words and concepts relevant for Connecting Practice, which has resulted in a Commentary on Nature–Culture Keywords, and by a survey among site managers based on a structured questionnaire, to reach out to a larger number of sites and their staff and gather information about the nature–culture connections at their sites. This report presents the activities carried out, the results obtained, the lessons learned and the challenges encountered in the implementation of this phase of the project. The third phase has also offered the opportunity to reflect on the three phases of the project as a whole and its achievements, to clarify its position among other initiatives, platforms or projects and to outline perspectives and actions for the future.
