This phenomenon is very important; in fact, in the past and still today, it causes the disappearance of a thick outer layer of the curtain walls. It is possible to prove that the sixteenth-century walls of Padua were originally whitewashed, at least in some segments of the eleven km of their extension. In fact, nowadays, there are some fragments of lime that finally turn a bright ochre. Was this surface finish thought of as a strengthening of the exterior surfaces of poor bricks produced during a war economy?
