This article discusses the evolution of the notion of serial properties applied only to cultural heritage. The author emphasizes that the enrollment of the first serial properties on the List of World Heritage intervenes in 1979, and this notion will be defined by the Guidelines for the implementation of the World Heritage Convention only in the 1980 version of this document. The article evokes the challenges this notion is in terms of identification and definition of their outstanding universal value and the author returns to the fact that the World Heritage Committee, the World Heritage Centre, the Advisory Bodies and States parties have already discussed in recent years about this concept and practice, both nationally and internationally.

Cet article traite de l’évolution de la notion de biens en série qui s’applique uniquement au patrimoine culturel. L’auteur souligne que l’inscription des premiers biens en série sur la Liste du Patrimoine Mondial intervient en 1979 et cette notion sera définie par les Orientations devant guider la mise en œuvre de la Convention du patrimoine mondial seulement dans la version de 1980 de ce document. L’article évoque les défis que cette notion représente en termes d’identification et de définition de leur valeur universelle exceptionnelle et l’auteur revient sur le fait que le Comité du patrimoine mondial, le Centre du patrimoine mondial, les organisations consultatives et les États parties ont déjà débattu ces dernières années ce concept et ses pratiques tant au niveau national qu’au niveau international.
