Proceedings of the symposium held in Aix-en-Provence on 7-8 March 1991. Big cities become more and more aware of the economical importance of tourism. Urban policies must take this parameter into account without damaging cultural heritage. Case studies reveal various management options and possibilities, but also the debate that occurred among the participants of this symposium.
