Résumé (en anglais)

The city of Santo Domingo houses the majority of the first religious constructions of the New World, all realized in the first years of century XVI, shortly after the discovery of America. These churches were built by Spanish builders who took and imposed their constructive systems on these new lands These churches present some specific characteristics among them the use of pots or jars, tiles and pipes of clay as fill to lighten the vaults. These elements, especially clay pots, have different shapes and sizes according to the dimensions of the church. This same structural solution to lighten the vaults has also been found in churches and constructions of other Spanish colonies in the Caribbean islands. To the Caribbean, in those first years, masters come, masons as well as a great number of people who in one way or another were linked to the construction trade that took with them their constructive knowledge which were shaped in these first churches of the New World.
