This symposium convened by ICOMOS on 20 and 21 November 1989 at the University of Naples, on the occasion of the bicentenary of the French Revolution of 1789, proposed to undertake a comparative study of the impact of the revolutions on cultural heritage, in a diachronic and universal manner. Quote from the introduction: "Some convergences are inevitable. Most of the revolutions in Latin America in the first half of the 19th century, most of the European revolutions of 1848 claim to be part of the French Revolution of 1789, adopting both the humanitarian ideals of the Déclaration des Droits de l'Homme et du Citoyen and the political, administrative and legal principles set out in 1789 upon Napoleon's accession. Similarly, almost all Marxist-Leninist revolutions proceed, at least in an initial stage, from the October 1917 revolution, whose normative role was evident ever since the creation of the Socialist Republic of Outer Mongolia in July 1921. These clusters should make it possible to define a certain number of transcendental patterns during this first meeting, even if it means criticizing and revoking them in a second phase of reflection, already scheduled by the organizers of the Naples symposium."

Ce colloque réuni par l'ICOMOS les 20 et 21 novembre 1989 à l'Université de Naples, à l'occasion du bicentenaire de la Révolution française de 1789, se proposait d'entreprendre une étude comparative de l'impact des révolutions sur le patrimoine culturel, de manière à la fois diachronique et universel. Citation de l'introduction : "Quelques regroupements sont inéluctables. La plupart des révolutions de l'Amérique latine, dans la première moitié du XIXème siècle, la plupart des révolutions européennes de 1848 se réclament de la Révolution française de 1789, adoptant à la fois les idéaux humanitaires de la Déclaration des Droits de l'Homme et du Citoyen et les principes politiques, administratifs et juridiques énoncés de 1789 à l'avènement de Napoléon. De même, presque toutes les révolutions marxistes-léninistes procèdent, au moins dans un stade initial, de la révolution d'octobre 1917 dont le rôle normatif est évident dès la création de la République Socialiste de Mongolie extérieure en juillet 1921. Ces regroupements devraient permettre de définir un certain nombre de schèmes transcendantaux au cours de cette première rencontre, quitte à les critiquer et à les révoquer en doute dans une seconde phase de réflexion, déjà programmée par les organisateurs du colloque de Naples."
