Abstract (in English)

Proceedings of the International symposium organized by State Office for Monument Preservation Hessen, the science city of Darmstadt and the German National Committee of ICOMOS e. V. Darmstadt, 17th - April 19, 2016. - In the early 20th century, the Darmstadt Artists’ Colony on the Mathildenhöhe generated groundbreaking stimulus that led to the development of Modernism. The artistic efforts of this group, which was established as a way of merging art and living, express the architectural and artistic dawn of Modernism through innovative architecture, a fresh brand of spatial arts and a style of design anticipating the future. These reform approaches led to a novel artistic programme that is visible even today, uniformly expressed in the ensemble and its buildings, parks and works of art. The site’s unique features, as well as its outstanding cultural and historical significance, were identified at the conference and set in an international context, through the presentation of historical analyses and typological comparisons.
