This publication documents positions on the issue “Industrial Cultural Landscapes in the World Heritage Context”. It reflects the results of the symposium of the same title that was hosted by ICOMOS Germany and TICCIH Germany. The symposium was part of the current qualification process of the project “Ruhr Area Industrial Cultural Landscape” as proposal for the Tentative List of the Federal Republic of Germany to update the List of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage of UNESCO. The symposium was intended as a sequel to the workshop entitled “Industrial and Mining Landscapes within World Heritage Context” held in October 2013 at the University of Technology Mining Academy Freiberg (Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg).

Die vorliegende Publikation dokumentiert Positionen zum Thema „Industrielle Kulturlandschaften im Welterbe-Kontext“. Sie spiegelt die Ergebnisse des gleichnamigen Symposiums, das ICOMOS Deutschland und TICCIH Deutschland zusammen mit der Stiftung Industriedenkmalpflege und Geschichtskultur in Kooperation mit deren Projektpartnern – dem Ministerium für Bauen, Wohnen, Stadtentwicklung und Verkehr des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen, den Landschaftsverbänden Rheinland und Westfalen-Lippe, dem Regionalverband Ruhr und der Emschergenossenschaft – im Februar 2015 auf der Kokerei Hansa in Dortmund veranstalteten. Das Symposium war Teil des laufenden Qualifizierungsprozesses des Projekts „Industrielle Kulturlandschaft Ruhrgebiet“ als Vorschlag für die Aufnahme in die Tentativliste der Bundesrepublik Deutschland zur Fortschreibung der UNESCO-Liste des Kultur- und Naturerbes der Welt. Das Symposium galt als Fortsetzung eines Workshops unter dem Titel „Industrial and Mining Landscapes within World Heritage Context“, der im Oktober 2013 an der Bergakademie Technische Universität Freiberg veranstaltet worden war. Im Zentrum der Dortmunder Tagung stand die Schärfung des Begriffs der Industriellen Kulturlandschaft und seiner Anwendung im Rahmen der UNESCO-Welterbekonvention. Darüber hinaus ging es darum, Impulse und Handlungsempfehlungen für das Welterbe-Projekt „Industrielle Kulturlandschaft Ruhrgebiet“ aus der internationalen und interdisziplinär vertretenen Fachwelt zu erhalten.
