In the history of the construction of iron bridges, Padua has a not very well-known record: the construction in Italy (then divided into various kingdoms) of the first suspension bridge designed by Claudio Galateo and put into operation in 1828. The Galateo bridge is inspired by the model of a suspension bridge with iron wires built in Geneva in 1823 with a design by Guillaume Henri Dufour. Starting from the 1840s, first in Turin and then in Padua, a metallurgical industry began and prospered until the end of the nineteenth century: it is the second production in metal carpentry, or the construction of iron products by remelting imported ferrous material, through a small furnace called "cubilot".
