The obligation to conserve and manage the heritage places and sites of the twentieth century is as important as our duty to conserve the significant cultural heritage of previous eras. The cultural heritage of the twentieth century is at risk from a lack of appreciation and care. Much has already been lost and more is in danger. It is a living, evolving heritage and it is essential to understand, conserve, interpret and manage it well for future generations. Approaches for the Conservation of Twentieth‐Century Cultural Heritage, seeks to contribute to the appropriate and respectful management of this important period of cultural heritage. While recognising existing heritage conservation documentsi, Approaches for the Conservation of Twentieth-Century Cultural Heritage identifies many of the issues specifically involved in the conservation of twentieth‐century heritage. It covers the full range of heritage typologies typically recognised as being worthy of conservation including architecture, structures, vernacular and industrial heritage, cultural landscapes including historic parks and gardens, historic urban landscapes, cultural routes and archeological sites. This document is intended for use by all those involved in heritage conservation and management processes that may impact twentieth-century heritage places and sites. Explanatory notes are incorporated where necessary and a glossary of terms completes the document.

Wajibu wa kuhifadhi na kusimamia sehemu, na maeneo ya urithi wa karne ya ishirini ni muhimu kama ilivyo jukumu letu kuhifadhi urithi muhimu wa utamaduni wa zama zilizotangulia. Urithi wa utamaduni wa karne ya ishirini uko hatarini kutokana na kutothaminiwa na kuhudumiwa. Sehemu kubwa ya urithi huu tayari umepotea na uliobaki unazidi kuwa hatarini. Ni urithi ulio hai na unaoendelea kukua na ni muhimu kuuelewa, kuuhifadhi, kuutafsiri na kuusimamia vyema kwa ajili ya vizazi vijavyo. Mbinu za uhifadhi wa urithi wa kiutamaduni wa karne ya ishirini, zinalenga kuchangia katika usimamizi mwafaka na wenye kuheshimu kipindi hiki muhimu cha urithi wa kiutamaduni. Huku ikitambua hati za uhifadhi zilizopo, hati hii ya Mbinu za uhifadhi wa Urithi wa kiutamaduni wa karne ya ishirini inabainisha mambo mengi hasa yanayohusishwa na uhifadhi wa urithi wa karne ya ishirini. Inashughulikia kiasi kikubwa cha taipolojia za urithi ambazo zinatambulika kuwa na thamani ya kuhifadhiwa ukijumuisha urithi wa usanifu, miundo, miundo ya kiasilia na turathi za viwanda, mandhari za kiutamaduni zikijumuisha mbuga za hifadhi za kihistoria na bustani, mandhari za kihistoria mijini, barabara za kihistoria na maeneo ya kiakiolojia. Hati hii imekusudiwa kutumiwa na wale wote wanaohusika katika uhifadhi wa urithi na michakato ya usimamizi ambayo inaweza kuathiri sehemu na maeneo ya urithi wa karne ya ishirini Muhtasari fafanuzi umejumuishwa pale ilipohitajika na kamusi ya masharti inaikamilisha hati.
