As the UNESCO description states, «Bam and its Cultural Landscape represents an outstanding example of an ancient fortified settlement that developed around the Iranian central plateau and is an exceptional testimony to the development of a trading settlement in the desert environment of the Central Asian region». The area surrounded by the city walls system, constitutes the ancient part of Bam (Arg-e Bam or Bam Citadel) and is situated in the Iranian Kerman Province, in the desert zone in the South-East of Iran. It is an exceptional case in which the osmosis between the built-up environment and nature is complete and even enriched by its chromatic appearance and soft silhouette resulting from the interaction between materials and atmospheric factors. The case of Arg-e Bam represents therefore a meaningful example of massive reconstruction and, at the same time, a real example for a common comparison of the concept of heritage authenticity.
