This report provides background on and discussion of indigenous heritage in the World Heritage context. Background consists of history of representation of indigenous heritage in World Heritage sites and decisions and actions taken by the World Heritage Committee with respect to indigenous peoples and their heritage. Discussion focuses on recent and ongoing challenges and opportunities for better understanding and recognizing indigenous heritage as World Heritage. As per the Terms of Reference, this report is expected to inform discussions within the ICOMOS Indigenous Heritage Working Group and development of a work plan, including for organization of an international workshop. The report does not seek to make definitive statements on indigenous heritage and how it should be addressed in the World Heritage context, nor can the report speak to how ICOMOS interacts directly with indigenous peoples or States Parties.

Ce rapport fournit des informations générales et une discussion sur le patrimoine autochtone dans le contexte du patrimoine mondial. Le contexte comprend l’historique de la représentation du patrimoine autochtone dans les sites du patrimoine mondial et des décisions et actions prises par le Comité du patrimoine mondial en ce qui concerne les peuples autochtones et leur patrimoine. La discussion porte sur les défis et les opportunités récents et en cours pour mieux comprendre et reconnaître le patrimoine autochtone en tant que patrimoine mondial. Conformément au mandat, il est prévu que ce rapport puisse éclairer les délibérations du groupe de travail de l’ICOMOS sur le patrimoine autochtone et l’élaboration d’un plan de travail, y compris l’organisation d’un atelier international. Le rapport ne prévoit pas émettre de déclarations définitives sur le patrimoine autochtone ou sur la manière de le prendre en compte dans le contexte du patrimoine mondial. Il ne prévoit pas non plus commenter sur les interactions de l’ICOMOS avec les peuples autochtones ou les États parties.
