International symposium of the German National Committee of ICOMOS, the State Authority for Monument Care of Baden-Württemberg and the working group Historical Gardens of the German Society for Garden Art and Landscape Culture (DGGL), Baden-Baden, 19-21 March 2015. No spa without spa gardens. Spa gardens and spa parks are an integral part of a health resort, as they emerged as an independent type of settlement in Europe from the 17th century onwards. They had a decisive role in the traditional European spa system, combining therapeutics - primarily by water - with relaxation, social events and physical exercise. And they still shape the structure, appearance and image of spa towns and resorts today. As numerous and varied as the spa towns in Europe are their spa gardens and spa parks. But do spa gardens form a separate type of garden? In March 2015, the German National Committee of ICOMOS, together with the State Office for the Preservation of Monuments at the Regional Council of Stuttgart and the Working Group on Historic Gardens at the German Society for Garden Art and Landscape Culture (DGGL), organised an international symposium in Baden-Baden at which the special characteristics and historical significance of European spa gardens and spa parks were discussed in depth and in international comparison. The content of the event followed on from the international conference "European Spa Towns and Fashionable Spas of the 19th Century". It serves as a further professional contribution to the transnational serial nomination of Great Spas of Europe to the UNESCO World Heritage List. The eighteen contributions in the volume are first devoted to the spatial and temporal diversity of spa facilities in Europe. They then deal with their formal and functional peculiarities and their characteristic amenities, based on individual examples and in overview. In addition, the interrelationships between spa facilities, urban development and cultural landscape are discussed. The book concludes with the question of how to deal with the cultural heritage of historical spa gardens and parks in terms of monument preservation.

Kurgärten und Kurparks sind fester Bestandteil eines Kurortes, wie er sich ab dem 17. Jahrhundert in Europa als ein eigenständiger Siedlungstyp herausgebildet hat. Sie spielten eine entscheidende Rolle im traditionellen europäischen Kurwesen, das therapeutische Anwendungen — vor allein von Wasser — mit Zerstreuung, gesellschaftlichen Veranstaltungen sowie körperlicher Bewegung kombinierte. Und sie prägen bis heute die Struktur, das Erscheinungsbild und das Image von Kurstädten und Badeorten. So zahlreich und vielgestaltig wie die Kurorte in Europa sind auch deren Kurgärten und Kurparks. Aber bilden die Kuranlagen einen eigenen Gartentyp? Im März 2015 veranstaltete das Deutsche Nationalkomitee von ICOMOS zusammen mit dem Landesamt für Denkmalpflege im Regierungspräsidium Stuttgart und dem Arbeitskreis Historische Gärten in der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Gartenkunst und Landschaftskultur (DGGL) eine internationale Fachtagung in Baden-Baden, auf der die besonderen Eigenschaften und die historische Bedeutung europäischer Kurgärten und Kurparks vertiefend und im internationalen Vergleich diskutiert wurden. Die Veranstaltung schloss sich inhaltlich an die internationale Tagung „Europäische Kurstädte und Modebäder des 19. Jahrhunderts" an. Sie leistete damit einen weiteren fachlichen Beitrag zu der transnationalen seriellen Nominierung Great Spas of Europe für die UNESCO-Welterbeliste. Die achtzehn Beiträge des Bandes widmen sich zunächst der räumlichen und zeitlichen Vielfalt der Kuranlagen in Europa. Sie behandeln dann anhand von Einzelbeispielen und im Überblick deren formale und funktionale Besonderheiten und ihre charakteristische Ausstattung. Darüber hinaus werden Wechselbeziehungen zwischen den Kuranlagen, dem Städtebau und der Kulturlandschaft thematisiert. Den Abschluss bildet die Frage nach dein denkmalpflegerischen Umgang mit dem Kulturerbe historischer Kurgärten und Kurparks.
