In view of the enormous number of tasks involved in preserving the diversity of the historical heritage, there is a danger that the fundamental ideas that are generally binding for heritage conservation at the international level will not be observed. This publication is a presentation of principles of heritage conservation at the national and international level, developed from practical experience. The aim is to apply these principles both in the field of traditional craftsmanship and in the field of modern conservation science. Michael Petzet's explanations, which are based on decades of worldwide experience as a monument conservator, are supplemented by the most important international charters and resolutions on issues of monument conservation.

Angesichts der gewaltigen Aufgabenfülle bei der Bewahrung der Vielfalt des historischen Erbes besteht die Gefahr, dass die für die Denkmalpflege auf internationaler Ebene allgemein verbindlichen grundsätzlichen Vorstellungen nicht beachtet werden. Die Publikation ist eine aus der Praxis entwickelte Darstellung denkmalpflegerischer Grundsätze auf nationaler und internationaler Ebene. Ziel ist die Anwendung dieser Grundsätze sowohl im Bereich des traditionellen Handwerks wie im Bereich der modernen Konservierungswissenschaften. Ergänzt werden die auf der jahrzehntelangen, weltweiten Erfahrung als Denkmalpfleger basierenden Ausführungen Michael Petzets durch die wichtigsten internationalen Chartas und Resolutionen zu Fragen des Denkmalschutzes.
