This publication provides a foundation for understanding the essence of historical and cultural landscapes of Greater Saint Petersburg. The dangers threatening this outstanding manifestation of national and world culture are so obvious today that only the development and adoption of urgent measures - legislative, legal, scientific, methodological, organisational - will be able to restrain negative processes and give them a civilized character based on a reasonable balance between practical, economic, aesthetic and socio-cultural requirements. This undoubtedly includes the sphere of heritage protection, including landscape protection, which needs to be transformed in connection with the tasks and challenges of today.

Настоящее издание закладывает основу понимания сущности исторических и культурных ландшафтов «большого» Санкт-Петербурга. Опасности, угрожающие этому феноменальному явлению отечественной и мировой культуры, сегодня столь очевидны, что только разработка и принятие срочных мер — законодательных, юридических, научно-методических, организационных — сможет поставить заслон на пути негативных процессов, придать им цивилизованный характер, основанный на разумном балансе между практическими, экономическими, эстетическими и социокультурными требованиями. К последним бесспорно принадлежит и сфера охраны наследия, в том числе ландшафтного, которая нуждается в преобразовании в связи с задачами и вызовами сегодняшнего дня.
