This booklet was issued in equivalent English and Spanish versions at the ICOMOS international scientific conference held in Pécs (Hungary) on 22-27 May 2004 for the fortieth anniversary of the Venice Charter. It includes the author's memories of the 2nd International Congress of Architects and Technicians of Historic Monuments held in Venice in 1964, (which resulted into the adoption of the Venice Charter and the later creation of ICOMOS in 1965) followed by insights on the reception of the Charter over 40 years in Latin America. It then details and anlyses the Quito regulations that were drafted as a reaction to the Venice Charter in this context.
