As the result of doctoral research, this book deals with the themes that link the concept of authenticity and restoration, both in its theoretical aspects and those relating to practice. Starting with the different etymological meanings, it traces the philosophical premises of the early twentieth century for the interpretation of the work, with particular regard to architectural phenomenology. The views that have addressed the theme of authenticity in areas contiguous to architectural and historiographical culture are explored in order to draw a framework of scientific and cultural contributions to the evolution of the notion, including through international documents. Specific references are made to those who have worked in the field of restoration and an updated contribution to the debate is provided up to the threshold of the 21st century.
