Résumé (en anglais)

The German National Committee of ICOMOS, together with the Institute for Foreign Relations, the German UNESCO Commission and the Chamber of Architects of Baden-Württemberg, organized the conference "Architects and Preservation" in Ulm on June 18-20, 1992. Not the theme of "New Construction in Old Surroundings", at times discussed ad nauseam, was to be taken up in the conference but rather the sometimes conflicting role of the architect in connection with contemporary preservation efforts, be it the role of the creative architect involved exclusively with new buildings — at best the monuments of the future — or the role of the architect as specialist for the repair of historic buildings or for investigative building research. The strained relation between preservation and the "modern" architecture of the particular moment has changed greatly in the past decades. In the 19th century preservation with its tendency to continue in the historical styles (and in some circumstances even to "build back" a monument accordingly), was to a certain degree part of the contemporary architecture of historicism. With the turn of the century an epoch came in which preservation, at least in theory, retreated to the mere conserving of historic buildings, whereas new architecture, cleansed of all historicism, was to understood as a clear contrast to the old. Finally, there was the process of replacement ("Construction as Environmental Devastation") of which the public became more and more conscious — and not for the first time during Preservation Year in 1975 when it was dramatized in the travelling exhibition of the German National Committee for Preservation, for example, through a conscious bias toward harsh contrasts between the "good old" and the "bad new". Today, in comparison, with preservation in general being taken quite seriously as a part of the overall environmental movement, there are not only improved standards in the dealings of the architect specialized in preservation work with historic buildings. There are also diverse possibilities following the impulses, not unimportant in this context, of the "Post Modern" (in part already outmoded) for new architecture to establish a dialogue with historic buildings and thus achieve a new freedom in the coexistence of new and old — and a new freedom in the dealings of architects and preservationists with one another, as perhaps was also manifested in the Ulm conference. Ulm was in any case an ideal place for this encounter between architects and preservationists, with the project by Richard Meier under construction next to the Ulm Minster. In a certain sense this project was a central topic of the conference, even though it was not possible to induce Richard Meier to give a lecture. [Extract from the foreword by Michael Petzet]

Das Deutsche Nationalkomitee von ICOMOS hat vom 18. bis 20. Juni 1992 in Ulm gemeinsam mit dem Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen. der Deutschen UNESCO-Kommission und der Architektenkammer Baden-Württemberg die Tagung "Architekten und Denkmalpflege" veranstaltet. Nicht das gelegentlich bis zum Überdruss diskutierte Thema "Neues Bauen in alter Umgebung" sollte hier zur Sprache kommen, sondern jene gelegentlich durchaus zwiespältige Rolle des Architekten im Zusammenhang mit den denkmalpflegerischen Bemühungen unserer Zeit, sei es die Rolle des ausschließlich mit Neubauten - im besten Fall Denkmäler der Zukunft - beschäftigten schöpferische Architekten oder auch die Rolle des Architekten als Spezialist für die Instandsetzung von Baudenkmälern oder als Spezialist für Untersuchungen in der Bauforschung. Dabei hat sich das Spannungsverhältnis zwischen Denkmalpflege und einer jeweils «modernen" Architektur in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten stark gewandelt: Nach dem 19. Jahrhunden, als eine in den historisierenden Stilen weiterbauende (unter Umständen auch die Denkmäler entsprechend "zurückbauende") Denkmalpflege bis zu einem gewissen Grad Teil der zeitgenössischen Architektur als deutlicher Gegensatz zum Alten, als Kontrast. zu verstehen war, schließlich jener der Öffentlichkeit nicht erst im Denkmalschurzjahr 1975 immer deutlicher bewusst gewordene Verdrängungsprozess ("Bauen als Umweltzerstörung"), wie er damals u. a. von der in bewusster Einseitigkeit auf harte Kontraste zwischen dem "guten Alten" und dem "schlechten Neuen" angelegten Wanderausstellung des Deutschen Nationalkomitees für Denkmalschutz herausgestellt worden ist. Heute, angesichts einer als Teil der allgemeinen Umweltschutzbewegung im allgemeinen durchaus ernst genommenen Denkmalpflege. gibt es dagegen nicht nur verbesserte Standards im Umgang des auf denkmalpflegerische Aufgaben spezialisierten Architekten mit historischer Architektur. Es gibt auch je ne vielfältigen Möglichkeiten neuer Architektur, sich nach den in diesem Zusammenhang nicht ganz unwichtigen Impulsen einer - zum Teil bereits wieder überholten - "Postmoderne" mit historischer Architektur auseinanderzusetzen und damit eine neue Freiheit im Nebeneinander von Neu und Alt. - eine neue Freiheit im Umgang von Architekten und Denkmalpflegern miteinander, wie sie vielleicht auch in der Ulmer Tagung zum Ausdruck gekommen ist.
