Résumé (en anglais)

Together with the Institute for Foreign Relations and the Berlin Senate Administration the German National Committee of ICOMOS organized an international conference under the title “Iconoclasm in Eastern Europe — The Monuments of the Communist Era in Upheaval”, held in the embassy of the Russian Federation in Berlin on February 18-20, 1993. The central issue was whether these monuments are to be subjected to political appraisal only as exclusively political monuments, or whether they have a claim to monument protection and care as part of a historical epoch. After many monuments understandably fell victim to the spontaneous outrage of the people already during the first days of liberation from the communist tyranny, by now their removal is decreed on an administrative level (the demounted Lenin Monument in Berlin-Friedrichshain, for example). Is history being repressed here, thus preventing efforts to come to terms with the past, or is the further dismantling of statues, national emblems, mausoleums, etc. a necessary act of liberation? Is it a question of saving works of art or of removing political kitsch? The conference in Berlin, at which preservationists and historians took positions on these issues, included several contributions and reports from the former East Block countries. A photo exhibition in the embassy foyer and an excursion to monuments from the era of the former German Democratic Republic ac-companied the conference. The photo exhibition, “Preserving —Destroying — Changing / Political Monuments of the GDR in East Berlin” was organized by Eberhard Elfert and Martin Schönfeld. The conference plan was developed together with Prof. Dr. Helmut Engel, a member of the German National Committee of ICOMOS, and Erika Richter of the institute for Foreign Relations. My thanks also go to Prof. Klaus Daweke, General Secretary of the Institute for Foreign Relations, for the effective collaboration. As a follow-up to the conference, which met with a broad public response, a symposium on Stalinist architecture is planned for 1995, again in Berlin. [Foreword by Michael Petzet]

Gemeinsam mit dem Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen und der Senatsverwaltung Berlin veranstaltete das Deutsche Nationalkomitee von ICOMOS in der Botschaft der Russischen Föderation in Berlin vom 18. bis 20. Februar 1993 eine internationale Tagung mit dem Titel „Bildersturm in Osteuropa — Die Denkmäler der kommunistischen Ära im Umbruch“. Es ging um die Frage, ob diese Denkmäler als ausschließlich politische Denkmäler einer nur politischen Wertung zu unterziehen sind, oder ob sie als Teil einer geschichtlichen Epoche Anspruch auf Denkmalschutz und Denkmalpflege haben. Nachdem schon in den ersten Tagen der Befreiung von kommunistischer Zwangsherrschaft viele Monumente aus verständlichen Gründen der spontanen Empörung der Bevölkerung zum Opfer gefallen sind, wird ihre Beseitigung inzwischen auf Verwaltungsebene verordnet (Beispiel das demontierte Lenin-Denkmal in Berlin-Friedrichshain). Wird hier Geschichte verdrängt und damit auch „Vergangenheitsbewältigung“ verhindert, oder ist die weitere Demontage von Statuen. Hoheitszeichen. Mausoleen u.a. ein notwendiger Akt der Befreiung? Geht es um die Rettung von Kunstwerken oder um die Beseitigung von Politkitsch? Die Veranstaltung in Berlin, bei der Denkmalpfleger und Historiker zu diesen Fragen Stellung nahmen, darunter eine Reihe von Beiträgen und Berichten aus den ehemaligen Ostblockstaaten. war von einer Fotoausstellung im Foyer der Botschaft und einer Exkursion zu den Denkmälern aus der Zeit der früheren DDR begleitet. Die Fotoausstellung >Erhalten — Zerstören — Verändern/Politische Denkmäler der DDR in Ostberlin< wurde von Eberhard Eifert und Martin Schönfeld organisiert. Das Konzept der Tagung wurde gemeinsam mit dem Kollegen Prof. Dr. Helmut Engel, Mitglied des Deutschen Nationalkomitees von [COMOS, und Frau Erika Richter vom Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen entwickelt. Zu danken habe ich für die gute Zusammenarbeit auch Herrn Prof. Klaus Daweke, dem Generalsekretär des Instituts für Auslandsbeziehungen. In Nachfolge der Tagung, die ein breites Echo in der Öffentlichkeit hatte, ist 1995, wieder in Berlin, ein Symposium über stalinistische Architektur geplant. [Vorwort von Michael Petzet]
