On the pews of the Wörlitz palace church members of the German National Committee of ICOMOS and of a working group on palaces and gardens in Germany met for a conference on the theme “The Palace and its Appurtenances: Historic Preservation Problems” (October 54, 1994). Discussions concerned the manifold issues that arise with preservation of this valuable part of our European cultural heritage. With palaces that are in private hands, frequent changes of ownership as well as tax burdens have led to the loss of historic appurtenances. Other problems are posed by palaces in state ownership in which the original functions of living and representation have often given way to use as a museum. Which historic period should be presented to the public? Palace administrations tend in general to retain the furnishings as the last resident left them, as a document of the stately domestic culture of the time. That can result in a mixture of different styles, with the wealth of an overlapping succession of furnishings from different periods. The visitor should sense that people have lived in these palaces. Attempts to preserve the last authentic state are not always possible: a profusion of furnishings could bring the stream of visitors to a standstill or could be an invitation to snatch historic valuables. Moreover, many interiors have been so thoroughly robbed of their original furnishings, or in the worst cases destroyed through war and plundering, that presentation as a museum seems questionable. What is a throne room without a throne, a bedroom without a bed? Here under certain circumstances the return to a historic period is required, and reconstructions based on professional research are allowed. Of course, the issue of the economic use of palaces remains particularly delicate. Within the circle of the conference participants there was consensus that a cautious marketing concept appears desirable under certain conditions, namely when it can be used to serve conservation purposes. Auf den Bänken der Wörlitzer Schlosskirche tagte das Deutsche Nationalkomitee von 1COMOS und der Facharbeitskreis Schlösser und Gärten in Deutschland zum Thema Das Schloss und seine Ausstattung als denkmalpflegerische Aufgabe (5. bis 8. Oktober 1994). Diskutiert wurden die vielfältigen Fragen der Denkmalpflege im Umgang mit diesem kostbaren Erbe unseres europäischen Kulturkreises. Häufiger Besitzerwechsel, auch steuerliche Belastungen haben besonders bei Schlössern in privater Hand zu Verlusten an der historischen Ausstattung geführt. Andere Probleme stellen sich bei Schlössern in staatlicher Hand, in denen die ursprüngliche Wohn- und Repräsentationsfunktion häufig einer musealen Nutzung gewichen ist. Welcher historische Zustand soll dem Besucher präsentiert werden? Die Schlösserverwaltungen tendieren hier im Allgemeinen dazu, die Möblierung möglichst so beizubehalten, wie sie vom letzten Bewohner hinterlassen wurde, als Zeitdokument anspruchsvoller Wohnkultur. Das kann eine Mischung verschiedener Stile bedeuten, mit dem Reichtum einer sich überlagernden Aufeinanderfolge verschiedener Einrichtungszustände. Der Besucher soll spüren: Hier haben Menschen gelebt. Dieser Versuch, den letzten authentischen Zustand zu konservieren, ist nicht immer möglich: Die Fülle der Ausstattung könnte den Besucherstrom ins Stocken bringen und zum schnellen Griff nach historischen Kostbarkeiten verleiten. Außerdem sind viele Interieurs ihres ursprünglichen Mobiliars soweit beraubt oder im schlimmsten Fall durch Krieg und Plünderung zerstört, dass eine museale Präsentation fragwürdig erscheint. Was soll ein Thronsaal ohne Thron, ein Schlafzimmer ohne Bett? Hier ist unter Umständen die Rückführung auf einen historischen Zustand gefordert, sind wissenschaftlich fundierte Rekonstruktionen erlaubt. Die Frage der wirtschaftlichen Nutzung der Schlösser bleibt natürlich besonders heikel — Einigkeit bestand im Kreis der Tagungsteilnehmer darüber, dass ein behutsames Marketingkonzept unter gewissen Voraussetzungen wünschenswert erschient, dann nämlich, wenn es in den Dienst der konservatorischen Aufgaben genommen werden kann.
