Legal protection given to culturally important ensembles - presenting historical or landscape value - has been chiefly developed, in Brazil, through the Secretariat of the National Historical and Artistic Endowment. State and Municipal Administrations have participated, although in a lesser evident manner, in the defence of historical centers.
