At the WTO conference in Manila (1980) tourism was recognized as a phenomenon with not only economic but also social and cultural dimensions. Mass tourism has recently created an excessive pressure on some world heritage monuments and sites. In view of these difficulties, this paper focusses on cultural tourism and demonstrates that the tourist experience becomes the cornerstone upon which all else is dependent.
