Abstract (in English)

Human response to natural and bui lt sur roundings, geography, hi story and population seeds sense of place. Over time, tha t response i s woven into a shared consciousness by memory, story and exper ience ultima tely imprint ing community with an indelible and phenomenal spirit , unique to its elf. Touri sm is an att ractive engine of growth and development ; however, when tourism pressures compete with community inte rests, sense of pl ace is imperiled. Tha t vulnerabil ity is made acute by sense of place’ s intangibil ity. To counter the vulnerability that intangibility cre ates, we developed a methodology to recognize, ana lyze, and pr esent sense of pla ce as essent ial to the susta inabil ity of host communities, cultural si tes and touri st des tinations. By arti culating wha t is f elt, sensed and perc eived, we reveal a vital set of asse ts for consideration in sustainable tourism deve lopment policy and planning. The paper describes our methodology and provides case s tudies of how we success fully use it with communitie s and cultur al sit es to create sus tainable development.
