Abstract (in English)

The overall aim of interpretation is to make natural and cultural heritage known, felt and valued for its conservation and protection. The Charter on Interpretation and Presentation of Cultural Heritage Sites (ICOMOS 2008) states that interpretation should be the result of meaningful collaboration between heritage practitioners, local communities and other stakeholders. The article presents the participatory process of designing interpretive material for the temple of Santiago Apóstol de Kuñotambo, Peru, following the completion of the conservation and seismic-resistant stabilisation project, a collaboration of the Getty Conservation Institute and the Dirección Desconcentrada de Cultura Cusco (DDC-C). This material not only presents the technical contents in an accessible way, but primarily conveys the meaning of the monument for the members of the farming community and the stages of their participation throughout the project and the work. The interpretation project aims to design large-format panels and educational material for primary school pupils. The material is based on the results of the dissemination and awareness-raising activities organised by the DDC-C before and during the construction work. The design process is developed through a series of meetings, interviews and activities with members of the farming community. First, the project is presented to the community for feedback, with the aim of shaping it according to their needs. Next, stakeholders gather information about the monument to be included in the interpretative material. Through surveys, villagers describe their memories and opinions, covering the significance of the site, the conservation project, as well as the future use of the temple. Once the material has been produced, dissemination activities and evaluation of the results of the project are developed. The article will demonstrate the opportunity to involve all stakeholders in the development of the interpretation project for the temple of Santiago Apostle of Kuñotambo, as has been done throughout the project and the conservation work. The result integrates the different narratives about the monument, highlighting the point of view of the members of the campesino community, alongside the voice and technical content of the conservation professionals.
