Abstract (in English)

From the very beginning of Panama’s republican period Spanish heritage has been the “face” of Panamanian cultural heritage, at least for the country’s elite. This image of Panamanian heritage was based on the remains of a greater colonial past in the face of foreign pressure. Indirectly this situation caused an imbalance in the perception of the heritage value of architecture, favoring rubble masonry buildings over timber construction with the subsequent neglect of the latter, a situation that today affects the integrity of Panama City’s historic district as a world heritage site.

Desde el inicio mismo del periodo republicano de Panamá, la herencia española ha sido la "cara" del patrimonio cultural panameño; por lo menos, para la élite del país. Esta imagen del patrimonio panameño se basó en los restos de un pasado colonial grandioso contrapuesto a la presión extranjera. Indirectamente, esta situación causó un desequilibrio en la percepción del valor patrimonial de la arquitectura, favoreciendo edificios de mampostería sobre la construcción en madera con el consiguiente abandono de esta última; situación que hoy afecta a la integridad del Casco Antiguo de la ciudad de Panamá como patrimonio de la humanidad.
