Abstract (in English)
On the occasion of the 1508 war the preparation of the defensive system of the city of Padua was hurried and restricted, at least initially, to the creation of a protective embankment built in front of the old city walls by piling earth against them. As such embankments appeared at once to be insufficient, more permanent structures were built in steps, as soon as the circumstances allowed it, the works continuing up to 1550. To-day the visible remains of the bastioned system are not easily restored to their original appearance. As the structures show a stratified superposition of several construction phases, documenting a frequent rearrangement of the fortifications up to the end of the 19th century, it is quite an arduous task to provide either an unambiguous historical interpretation or a reliable restitution of the ancient architectural state. The Padua walls exhibit the characters of a modern campaign fortress (roads, embankment, curtain, moat, glacis) and a scarp on the external face. The largest part of the decay of these walls may be attributed to the abandonment into which they fell after World War 2 when they lost their fast function, as the excise tax barrier. This resulted in a proliferation of a spontaneous vegetation, aggressive and damaging, which was favoured by a persistent dampness of the soil. The conservation project which is being implemented by the city administration involves, besides weeding of the structures, provisional pre-consolidation works (that should be localized and reversible) and structural consolidation (limited to sectors that underwent disrupting events of exceptional character) and finally some actual restoration.
