Abstract (in English)

In 1995 the restoration of the ‘Ferme des Planons’, situated in St Cyr-sur-Menthon in the Ain department, took place. A listed historic monument since 1938, it was the occasion to work on a rare and fragile vernacular heritage comprising a set of buildings erected between the 16th and 19th centuries with timber frame, wattle and daub, and bricks. Through a detailed preliminary study and the survey of similar works, this operation made it possible to rediscover traditional construction techniques. Additionally, a minimalist intervention with the use of old materials enabled the maximum conservation of the buildings. The project also involved the surrounding landscape through the reconstruction of the hedged farmlands. As part of a bigger operation to create a ‘Musée des pays de l’Ain ’, this particular operation was limited to the farm buildings. In order to address the potential impacts a museum opened to visitors would have on these buildings a discreet site museum was simultaneously constructed nearby. This paper will discuss the project, the impact it had on the restoration process and landscape, as well as the interest it incited in the region.

Réalisée dans les années 1995, la restauration de la ferme des Planons, classée Monument Historique en 1938 et sise à St Cyr-sur-Menthon dans le département de l’Ain, fût l’occasion d’intervenir sur un patrimoine vernaculaire rare et fragile, celui d’un ensemble de bâtiments édifiés des XVIème et XIXème siècles en pan de bois, torchis de terre et briques. Cette opération, par une étude préalable minutieuse et l’observation d’ouvrages similaires, permit de redécouvrir des techniques de construction traditionnelles mais aussi par une intervention minimaliste de privilégier la conservation maximale des ouvrages en place et l’emploi de matériaux anciens. Elle permit, également, d’intervenir sur le paysage environnant afin de rétablir les dispositions bocagères originelles. Intégrée dans une opération plus vaste de création d’un musée des pays de l’Ain, cette opération a limité, dans les bâtiments de la ferme, les impacts prévisibles d’un musée ouvert au public par la construction en parallèle et à proximité d’un musée de site dissimulé. L’intervention proposée évoquera ce projet, l’impact qu’il a eu sur les processus de restauration et le paysage et l’intérêt que cette opération patrimoniale suscita pour la région.
