Abstract (in English)

Vidoviči is a settlement above Martinščica on the island of Cres. The village is situated on the southern and southwestern part of the ridge. The strategic position of the settlement provides a good view of an extensive part of the Bay of Quarnero from Lošinj to the Istrian peninsula. The settlement is a good example of a coordinated combination of different morphological units. It has no defined centre or village core. The church is positioned at the east of the settlement and is not linked to it in any more concrete way. The residential section gradually gives way to agricultural plots enclosed by walls. Dry-stone enclosures formed by merged plots stand out in this area and include simple farm outbuildings. The structures in the residential district are arranged in clusters, whilst the remainder of the settlement is an amorphous network of enclosures, corridors and stone walls bordering pastures. The southern and southwestern sections slope down to the sea, highlighting the typical cultivated landscape of terraces and cascades. A particular feature is an enclosure containing structures of rather uniform appearance which are well structured in terms of typology. The ground floors of farm outbuildings normally house stabling; the upper floor contains a tool store and hayloft. Spatial and architectural qualities are embraced in the overall integration of the structures, in terms of functionality and the uniformity of materials, such as stone and wood. In terms of the organisation of the entire settlement, Vidoviči is a good example of an overall division and design of space: from the view of the bay to the typological division of structures, to the well-considered exploitation of the corridor network between enclosures.
