Abstract (in English)
The remains of the First World War are all around us, but we do not always know how to see them - or how to connect with the millions of personal stories with which they are inextricably linked. As the centenary of the First World War approaches, English Heritage, like many other bodies in the United Kingdom and around the world, is making preparations to help commemorate the conflict and remember those who suffered. Alongside this, it is setting out to investigate and explain the war’s legacy: the sites and buildings which played their part in the greatest war the world had known. This issue of Conservation Bulletin introduces some of the work that English Heritage and other conservation and community groups have already done in this field, and which will continue over the next few years.
