Abstract (in English)

The documents and materials collected in this brochure intend to provide material and suggestions for further research on the development of the National Committees of ICOMOS in Germany. They shed light on the development and expansion of ICOMOS in the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the German Democratic Republic (GDR) and the inter-German interrelationship against the background of the East-West conflict and the Cold War. The adoption of the Venice Charter in 1964, which can be regarded as a key document of ICOMOS and which came about in the international 23-member drafting committee without the participation of the German side, as well as the founding of ICOMOS in Warsaw and Krakow one year later, sought to build a symbolic bridge between East and West and across the Iron Curtain with the choice of location already in the founding phase of the international heritage council. This constellation assigned a special role to the preservation of monuments in the two German states and to the inner-German monument policy or the foreign cultural policy of the GDR and the FRG in the years until the opening of the Iron Curtain and until the unification of the ICOMOS members from Germany in a joint national committee.
