Abstract (in English)

This publication presents the results of work to date in securing the remains of the world-famous Buddha statues of Bamiyan, which were blown up by the Taliban in 2001. Since 2002, a team from ICOMOS Germany, in cooperation with the Rhine-Westphalia Technical University of Aachen (RWTH Aachen) and the Technical University of Munich (TU München), has been working to recover and document the fragments of these major works of the Gandhara period, which were created in the 6th/7th century AD. The publication shows the conservation methods developed during this spectacular rescue operation and opens up new perspectives for the continuation of the measure, which has so far been funded by the Federal Foreign Office within the framework of cultural aid for Afghanistan.
