Abstract (in English)

As part of the Global Strategy established in 1994 by the World Heritage Committee of UNESCO, with the main objective to ensure the future of a more representative, balanced and credible World Heritage List, and following the measures adopted at the 24th session of the Committee in Cairns (2000), the National Institute of Anthropology and History of Mexico, through its World Heritage Directorate, under sponsorship from ICOMOS International, 1COMOS Spain, and with the special collaboration of the World Heritage Centre, set up a meeting of experts entitled "Representativeness on the World Heritage List: the cultural and natural heritage of Ibero-America, the United States and Canada". It took place from 12 to 16 December 2003 at the regional museum of Querétaro, located in the city of Santiago de Querétaro. Most Ibero-American countries include in their indicative lists categories such as archaeological sites and colonial cities. In this meeting we proposed to "discover" together with Spain, Portugal, United States and Canada, properties of outstanding universal value located in our region pertaining to modern heritage (architecture and urbanism of the 19th and 20th centuries), landscapes and cultural itineraries, geological and fossil sites, wetlands, coastal and marine areas, marine ecosystems, industrial heritage, historical or artistic monuments, among other underrepresented categories. The concepts of these categories were likewise reviewed without neglecting the need to ensure mechanisms for the conservation and protection of the properties to be inscribed, and above all to consider the new conceptions of cultural heritage elaborated over the last two decades, which should remain open to the multiple cultural manifestations of outstanding universal value. For this event, we also count on the support of the governments of the State of Querétaro and the city of Santiago de Querétaro - inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1996 - to whom we are grateful for their valuable cooperation. We would also like to thank the participants, including some 35 experts selected for their professional work and wide experience in the field of cultural and natural heritage conservation. The results shown in these proceedings attest to the success of the regional meeting in substantive terms. Mexico thus collaborates, in a committed manner, with the objectives of the Strategy.
