Abstract (in English)

The Orthodox monasteries of the Balkans, which include Albania, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Greece, Macedonia, Romania, the European part of Turkey and Yugoslavia, are the subject of this study. Geographically, the study covers only part of the Orthodox world. However, there are reasons to carry out a special study devoted to Orthodox monasteries within this territory. The Balkans is not a mere geographical concept but also a specific cultural area with a clear identity. Orthodox monasteries express this identity in three respects: common historical roots, crossroads of external and internal relations, cultural continuity and dynamism. In the constant process of changing relationships, different centres of Orthodox monastic culture are born and develop, attesting to specific local modifications of the general Orthodox monastic model. This cycle of greatness and decadence sustains the cultural continuity and vitality of the Orthodox monastery concept. By its nature itself, Orthodox culture accepts local ethnic and cultural identity and thereby stimulates the process. In this study, the relevant monasteries will be referred under the name of the current Balkan country to which they territorially belong, even if they belonged to another country or if the currently relevant did not yet exist at the time of their foundation. Given the impossibility of covering the vastly numerous types of Orthodox monasteries in the Balkans, we will only mention some of the most typical examples, which are of major importance for the overall development. Les monastères orthodoxes des Balkans, qui englobent l’Albanie, la Bulgarie, Chypre, la Grèce, la Macédoine, la Roumanie, la partie européenne de la Turquie et la Yougoslavie, font l’objet de la présente étude. Du point de vue géographique, celle-ci ne couvre qu’une partie du monde orthodoxe. Il existe cependant des raisons pour qu’une étude spéciale, consacrée aux monastères orthodoxes, soit menée dans ce cadre territorial. Les Balkans ne sont pas qu’une simple notion géographique, mais aussi une aire culturelle spécifique, dont l’identité est bien manifeste. Les monastères orthodoxes sont l’expression de cette identité sous trois aspects : racines historiques communes, carrefour de relations extérieures et intérieures., continuité culturelle et dynamisme. Dans le processus constant d’évolution des relations, des centres différents de culture monastique orthodoxe naissent et se développent en attestant de modifications locales spécifiques du modèle monastique orthodoxe général. Ce cycle de grandeur et de décadence entretient la continuité culturelle et la vitalité de la conception du monastère orthodoxe. Par sa nature, la culture orthodoxe elle-même accepte l’identité ethnique et culturelle locale et de cette façon stimule le processus. Dans la présente étude, les monastères concernés seront mentionnés en fonction du nom du pays balkanique actuel auquel ils appartiennent du point de vue territorial, même si, à l’époque de leur fondation, ils appartenaient à un autre pays ou si le pays actuel concerné n’existait pas encore. Vu l’impossibilité pour l’étude d’englober la grande quantité de types de monastères orthodoxes dans les Balkans, nous ne retiendrons que certains des exemples les plus typiques, d’une importance majeure pour l’évolution générale.
