Abstract (in English)

This second issue of the ICOMOS Scientific Journal deals with the conservation of historic cities, towns, villages and neighbourhoods and reasserts the Charter for the conservation of historic towns and urban areas (Washington Charter). The first part is dedicated to the Galician city of Santiago de Compostela and the pilgrimage of the Way of Saint James (Camino de Santiago). The second part deals with various aspects of the conservation of historic cities and towns listed as the World Heritage by UNESCO: Cracow (Poland), Bath (United Kingdom), Timbuktu (Mali), Djenné (Mali), the Island of Gorée (Sénégal), Dubrovnik (Croatia), Oaxaca (Mexico), Brasilia (Brazil), Rauma (Finland). The third part addresses more general issues of the conservation of historic cities and includes two monographic studies of the “New Holland” ensemble in Saint Petersburg (Russia) and the village of Iruya in north-western Argentina. The fourth and last part was contributed by the Spanish national Committee of ICOMOS and deals with social and economic aspects of urban heritage, notably illustrated by case studies in Italy.
