Abstract (in English)

The international symposium « Manor Houses of the 16th -19th century in the Baltic Sea Region - History and Present » held from September 11 - 14, 1989 by the 1COMOS National Committee of the Federal Republic in cooperation with the Institute of Art History of the Christian-Albrecht-University Kiel and the State Conservation Office Schleswig-Holstein in the Academy Sankelmark has brought about more than advances in art history through the lectures of colleagues from Schleswig-Holstein, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Poland and the Democratic Republic of Germany. Apart from the results from research and inventory of the manor houses and estates as testimonies of the aristocratic culture in the Baltic Sea region, a first summary of preservation work possible under the varying political and economic regulations in the different countries could be established. The dangers threatening this group of monuments, which have already been reduced in number during the past decades, are indeterminable. The dangers range from ideologically justified destruction of evidence from aristocratic society to the constant change of historic structures used in modern agriculture and to the different consequences for further maintenance of the manor houses. In the resolution and summary of the discussions at the end of this journal, possible strategies are proposed aiming at the preservation of the manor houses and the farm buildings and park grounds belonging to them, which are so important for the cultural landscape of the Baltic Sea region. In Denmark alone, the Department for the Environment has published a comprehensive investigation on preservation of the manor houses in 1987, and the government of Sweden, as well, created a commission in order to investigate the different approaches concerning the conservation of the historic manor houses and estates. In the spirit of international cooperation in the field of monument conservation, which ICOMOS is promoting, the second volume of the « Journals of the German National Committee » may help to spur a new initiative for the preservation of an important cultural heritage in the Baltic Sea region. Das vom Deutschen Nationalkomitee von ICOMOS zusammen mit dem Kunsthistorischen Institut der Christian-Albrecht-Universität Kiel und dem Landesamt für Denkmalpflege Schleswig-Holstein vom 11.- 14. September 1989 in der Akademie Sankelmark veranstaltete internationale Symposium « Gutsanlagen des 16. bis 19. Jahrhunderts im Ostseeraum - Geschichte und Gegenwart » hat in den Referaten der Kollegen aus Schleswig-Holstein, Dänemark, Schweden, Finnland, Estland, Lettland, Polen und der Deutschen Demokratischen Republik nicht nur eine Fülle von kunsthistorischen Erkenntnissen gebracht. Denn neben den Ergebnissen der Erforschung und Inventarisierung der Gutsanlagen als Zeugnisse der Adelskultur des Ostseeraums wird hier auch ein erster Überblick über die Erhaltungsmöglichkeiten unter den höchst unterschiedlichen politischen und wirtschaftlichen Rahmenbedingungen gegeben. Dabei sind die Gefahren für diese zum Teil bereits stark reduzierte Denkmälergruppe in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten unübersehbar, von der - hoffentlich der Vergangenheit angehörigen - ideologisch begründeten Vernichtung von Zeugnissen der feudalen Gesellschaft bis zu dem fortwährenden Strukturwandel in der modernen Landwirtschaft und seinen unterschiedlichen Folgen für den weiteren Unterhalt der Gutsanlagen. In der Resolution und der Zusammenfassung der Diskussionsergebnisse am Schluß dieses Heftes werden mögliche Strategien zur Erhaltung der für die Kulturlandschaft des Ostseeraums so wichtigen Herrenhäuser samt den zugehörigen Wirtschaftsgebäuden und Parkanlagen aufgezeigt. Nur für Dänemark gibt es bisher eine vom dänischen Umweltministerium 1987 herausgegebene umfassende Untersuchung über die Erhaltung der Herrenhäuser, und auch die schwedische Regierung hat eine Kommission zur Untersuchung der unterschiedlichen Aspekte eingesetzt, die bei der Erhaltung der historischen Gutsanlagen und Herenhäuser zu beachten sind.
