Abstract (in English)

With its view of Karl Marx Avenue, formerly Stalin Avenue, the conference room of the Berlin Chamber of Architects was an appropriate setting for the international conference on "Stalinist Architecture under Monument Protection?". Jointly sponsored by the Berlin Senate Administration for Urban Development and Environmental Protection and the German National Committee of ICOMOS on September 6-9. 1995. This theme, again taken up at the initiative of Prof. Dr. Helmut Engel, carried on the well-justified tradition that began with the ICOMOS conference "Iconoclasm in Eastern Europe" held in 1993 in the embassy of the Russian Federation in Berlin (conference papers published in the ICOMOS Journals of the German National Committee, vol. XIII): an effort to come to terms with the architectural evidence of the communist era from politico-cultural and preservation viewpoints. Once again a number of architectural historians and preservationists from Eastern Europe (Russia, Ukraine, the Baltic countries, Hungary, Bulgaria and Albania) spoke in Berlin. At the beginning of the Stalinist period the architecture of the Soviet Union included, in addition to neo-classicism and the search for a national style, a modern movement with rationalistic and constructivist elements, but the architectural community was later brought into line with brutal purges. According to the Moscow Directive, the official architecture of the various Soviet republics and of the East European states that belonged to the East Block after World War II was to be "socialist in content and national in form" but to some extent architecture in these places did go its own way and can no longer be dismissed in a history of 20th century architecture with old catchphrases like "wedding cake architecture". The architectural evidence of this epoch, which came to an end with Khrushchev’s destalinization speech in 1954, can now be considered historically and from a preservation perspective. In addition to examples of Stalinist architecture in Thuringia and Saxony the central theme of the conference in Berlin was of course the renovation and revitalization of the former Stalin Avenue, which is protected by monument listing. The conference opened up an international exchange of experience concerning the handling of Stalinist architecture. [Foreword by Michael Petzet]

Der Sitzungssaal der Berliner Architektenkammer mit Blick auf die Karl-Marx-Allee, die ehemalige Stalinallee, war der passende Tagungsort für die vorn 6. bis 9. September 1995 von der Berliner Senatsverwaltung für Stadtentwicklung und Umweltschutz und dem Deutschen Nationalkornitee von ICOMOS gemeinsam veranstaltete internationale Tagung zum Thema "Stalinistische Architektur unter Denkmalsschutz". Mit diesem Programm, das wieder auf eine Initiative des Kollegen Prof. Dr. Helmut Engel zurückgeht, wurde die von ICOMOS 1993 mit der in der Botschaft der Russischen Föderation veranstalteten Tagung "Bildersturm in Osteuropa" (Vorträge publiziert in ICOMOS — Hefte des Deutschen Nationalkomitees, Bd. XIII) begründete Tradition fortgeführt, sich unter kulturpolitischen und denkmalpflegerischen Gesichtspunkten verstärkt mit den Zeugnissen der kommunistischen Ära auseinanderzusetzen. Auch diesmal kamen in Berlin wieder eine Reihe von Architekturhistorikern und Denkmalpflegern aus Osteuropa zu Wort, aus Russland, Ukraine, den baltischen Staaten, Ungarn, Bulgarien. Albanien. Während es zu Beginn der Stalinzeit in der Architektur der Sowjetunion neben Neoklassizismus und der Suche nach einem nationalen Stil noch eine Moderne mit rationalistischen und konstruktivistischen Richtungen gab, wurde die Architektenschaft später mit brutalen Säuberungsaktionen gleichgeschaltet. Die offizielle Architektur der verschiedenen Sowjetrepubliken und der nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg zum Ostblock gehörigen osteuropäischen Staaten sollte nach der Moskauer Direktive "sozialistisch im Inhalt und national in der Form" sein, ging aber zum Teil eigene Wege und kann in einer Geschichte der Architektur des 20. Jahrhunderts nicht mehr mit alten Schlagworten wie "wedding cake architecture" abgetan werden. Die Zeugnisse einer Epoche, die mit Chruschtschows Entstalinisierungsrede von 1954 zu Ende ging, lassen sich hi-storisch einordnen und werden heute auch unter denkmalpflegerischen Gesichtspunkten betrachtet. Neben Beispielen stalinistischer Architektur aus Thüringen und Sachsen waren in Berlin natürlich Fragen der Sanierung und Revitalisierung der unter Denkmalschutz stehenden ehemaligen Stalinallee das zentrale Thema der Konferenz, die einen internationalen Erfahrungsaustausch über den Umgang mit stalinistischer Architektur eröffnet hat.
