Abstract (in English)

"The International Charters for the Conservation and Restoration of Monuments and Historical Sites" is a comprehensive resource exploring a variety of international charters and declarations related to the preservation and restoration of monuments and historical sites. It highlights the principles, foundations, and international standards aimed at protecting and preserving global cultural heritage. The publication presents the texts of these charters and important declarations established by ICOMOS and other international organizations working in this field. There are many types of ICOMOS texts: charters, principles, declarations, guidelines and documents, created and adopted by a variety of ICOMOS bodies from the General Assembly to ICOMOS National and Scientific Committees. Similar to ICCROM, ICOMOS produces texts that are the direct results of conferences, meetings or groups of heritage professionals. This publication also emphasizes the importance of guidelines and principles in preserving monuments, sites, and collections encompassing diverse forms of cultural heritage. These include historical sites, buildings, archaeological landmarks, natural sites, historical urban areas, historical parks, and more. The content of these guidelines covers topics related to the protection and sustainability of cultural heritage through documentation, registration, analysis, evaluation, restoration, education, training, sustainable management, public awareness, and encouragement to adopt sustainable cultural tourism management principles. Additionally, it provides support for local communities and promotes international cooperation in the conservation and restoration of tangible cultural heritage in all its forms. Overall, this publication showcases the evolution of conservation and preservation principles derived from these charters issued by ICOMOS, starting with the Venice Charter developed in 1964, focusing on architectural historical landmarks and extending to modern charters and declarations addressing the conservation of built heritage, historical gardens, cities, and urban areas. Since the Venice Charter (1964), ICOMOS has built a solid philosophical, doctrinal and managerial framework for the sustainable conservation of cultural heritage around the world. A doctrinal text is a group of ideas which aimed to direct action. ICOMOS, at the international level, develops a corpus of doctrinal texts as a necessary basis for conservation work and policies. The first objective of these doctrinal texts is to influence the practices of its members and heritage professionals in general, but they also aim to inspire all levels of government to use them to support the conservation of cultural heritage. This resource fulfills the need to make these charters available to Arabic-speaking professionals and addresses evolving topics related to these charters, covering fundamental aspects and concepts such as authenticity, cultural heritage management, and promoting cultural tourism in places with heritage significance.
